December Meeting Minutes

Fr. Nicholas Reid Dear Brother Knights,

With the beginning of 2012 upon us we have the customary opportunity to look forward and backward. As we do, it is tempting to get ‘tunnel vision’ and see only single moments or events as they occurred in 2011 or those we hope to have come to fruition in 2012. While life comes at us one event at a time no single event tells the entire story.
As Christians we do not move through life on our own strength but on a firm foundation given to us through our relationship with God. In the book of Proverbs we read, “When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever (Proverbs 10:25).”

We are able to stand firm on account of our adoption as sons of God. St. Paul beautifully captures this in the 4th chapter of his letter to the Galatians verses 4-5.
When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son…
so that we might receive adoption as sons.

And this adoption allows us to pray to our God as no one has even been able to pray before, not even the Jewish people; with the word Abba, meaning father. This word abba reflects the trust and tenderness that a small child has for his Father and invites us to enter into our newfound relationship with God through baptism and the sacraments with a divine trust that He who created us and gave us His only son will not leave us as orphans.
May each of your receive many moments of consolation in the New Year as sons of our Heavenly Father!

In Christ,
Fr. Reid

Our October Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities raised approximately $2,500, which will be donated to the following charities: Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (50%); Vogelweid Learning Center (25%), and Capitol Projects (25%).

Our October and December breakfasts served about 150 patrons and 125 patrons, respectively. Many thanks to all who attended and to those who volunteered their time. Our next breakfast will be held on Sunday, January 15, which will be our last one until August as we head into Lent and the three fish fries that we will be hosting.

The Highway 179 cleanup was conducted on October 22. Thanks to Dale Highfill for coordinating it.

Our Council also hosted a lunch and dinner for the Deacons of our Diocese on October 22. We served about 160 religious that day and many complements were received. Special thanks to Rich Burkemper, fellow Knight and owner of Kate & Alley’s Pizza, who supplied his delicious salad dressing that day.

Thanks to all the Knights who helped set up and clean up at the Christmas Bazaar in November. Everyone’s collective efforts made our jobs go very smoothly.

Our order for Knight’s shirts and jackets has been received. Please pick up your order as soon as practical. Checks should be payable to K of C Council 12992 ($27.00 – Shirt; $50.00 – Jacket).

Registration deadline is January 20, 2012. Please contact me if you are interested in participating.

The Habitat for Humanity renovation project started in July and is expected to continue into the Spring. Much has been done through cooperative efforts with the Helias 1054 and Monsignor Pleus 14906 Councils; but much work remains. Our next scheduled dates of service are Saturday, January 7 and January 14. Contact Lew Hancock (893-6870) to volunteer. All skills levels are needed.

Welcome to the following parishioners who were inducted into the First Degree of our Order in December: David Cheese, Dave Lanigan, Larry Schulte, Michael Suresh, Scott Thierot, Rick Thrash, and Jay Tioleco. Congratulations new members, we look forward to your involvement in our Council.

Ocotober Meeting Minutes

2011 Fish FryOur council held a couple of activities recently and I got hold of some photos of them.

Here’s one from our recent fish fry. The Sept 23 Fish Fry was attended by approximately 250 guests with proceeds to benefit the Samaritan Center. The macaroni & cheese was a big hit, but ran out too soon according to Grand Knight, Rich Anderson. Thanks to everyone for their support.

2011 Tootsie Roll DriveWe also just held our annual tootsie roll drive. Here’s some information about this annual event from the national Knights website:

“Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities”

One of the most popular and successful programs conducted by Knights of Columbus state and local councils for the benefit of people with intellectual disabilities is the fund-raiser in which councils collect donations outside stores and on street corners. In appreciation, the donor is offered a candy bar, often a Tootsie Roll. The high visibility of this program has led to the campaign being referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.”

The nickname is understandable, but misleading.

The Knights of Columbus has no official tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer. In fact, many councils participate in the same fund-raising drive, but distribute other items. References to this program should highlight the good the money does, not advertise a candy bar. For these reasons, it is strongly recommended that this project be promoted as the “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities” rather than the “Tootsie Roll Drive.”

Have you joined the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Guild?

The Knights of Columbus provided an established structure for making Father McGivney’s spirituality well known. He is familiar to Knights as their virtuous founder, so it is not surprising that as his cause for canonization advances, Knights increasingly turn to him as intercessor.

Each March 29, thousands of Knights of Columbus and their family members take part in Founder’s Day Masses and services acknowledging Father McGivney as the source of their active lay corps. In August, at Masses held in conjunction with Knights of Columbus Family Day, they remember his death at age 38 on Aug. 14, 1890. At the conclusion of their regular business meetings, Knights say the prayer for Canonization of Father McGivney. They also make up a majority of the more than 83,000 members of the Father McGivney Guild, which serves as the official clearinghouse for information about Father McGivney.

The Council approved a $500 contribution to support the start up of a Pregnancy Help Center in Jefferson City and is appealing to its members and others to consider attending a fund raising dinner on Thursday, October 13, at the Capital Ritz (see attached flyer). Individual donations can be mailed directly to Pregnancy Help Center of Central MO, P.O. Box 105316, Jefferson City, MO 65110. For more information please contact Kurt Dudenhoeffer at 230-9840 or kcdudenhoeffer@gmail.com.

The Council also approved a $3,520 donation to its State Council in support of a new $2 million “Meet Life” initiative that establishes a bold and noble goal of giving thousands of children a chance to live and be welcomed as members of the human family. The goal is to purchase and install an ultrasound machine at each Pregnancy Help Center throughout Missouri within the next 5 years. Individual donations can be mailed directly to Columbian Charities, c/o Mark Ruether, 1448 Briar Village Court, Jefferson City, MO 65109. Please contact Mark at 659-7869 or mruether@juno.com for more information.

28 members from our Council advanced into the Patriotic Degree of the Order, our highest honor, on August 27. This is an outstanding response and commitment from our membership.

The Sept 16/17 Samaritan Center Food Drive was very successful. The Bishop McAuliffe and Monsignor Pleus Councils collected approximately 3,300 pounds of non-perishable food and $1,100. Many thanks to Gerbes Super Store, Gerbes West, Schulte’s Fresh Foods, Moser’s Discount Foods, and Schnucks Supermarket for allowing us on their premises.

The Sept 23 Fish Fry was attended by approximately 250 guests with proceeds to benefit the Samaritan Center. The macaroni & cheese was a big hit, but ran out too soon. Thanks to everyone for their support.

The Habitat for Humanity renovation project still needs volunteers. Work will continue each Saturday until the job is completed. Our hours are from 8:00am to 3:00pm with lunch provided. Please call Lew Hancock at 645-8511 if you can help.

The Trustees completed their annual audit of our books and records for fraternal year ending June 30.

Work continues on the Super Save Card program; distribution has been delayed until mid-November.

Orders are being collected now through October 27 from Council members and members of the Ladies Auxiliary who wish to purchase a high quality shirt or jacket embroidered with their name and Knight’s logo. This is an excellent way for us to display our presence and solidarity.

Upcoming Calendar review:

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00pm in the Undercroft; it will be preceded by a meal beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The annual Tootsie Roll Drive is scheduled for Fri/Sat, October 7/8. Please call Terry Jarrett at 636-3982 if you can help.

Rich Anderson, Grand Knight
