Brother Knights:
If you missed last month’s Knight’s Letter it is available on our web site. We were a little late getting it in and when we missed April 5th it contained some information dealing with Easter and so it wouldn’t have fit on another weekend.
I want to thank everyone who came out to our annual chicken dinner, we will give all the proceeds to our school, PSR, and Helias teachers at next years Teacher Appreciation Dinner to be held during Catholic School Week.
Our business meeting on this Wednesday May 13th will begin at 7:00 PM in the Undercroft.
The K of C State Convention was again held in Jefferson City on April 24th, 25th and 26th. The steak fry we held on Friday the 24th for those coming to the Convention was a huge success. We only had 4 steaks left at the end of the night. Thanks to Al Meyer and his crew for putting on a great event.
The St Jude Walk-A-Thon will be held this coming weekend at the Helias track, come out on Saturday morning and make a contribution to St Jude’s. In case of rain it will be moved one week to the 23rd.
Mark your calendar the annual Fish Fry for the Carmelite Nuns will be held on Friday June 12th.
Vivat Jesus!

It is no accident that the Roman Church came to assign the nastiest month of the year, as far as weather is concerned, to the poor souls in Purgatory. November in Rome is damp, cold, and windy. The mind naturally turns to those who suffer for the sake of something good to come. It is also no accident that the Roman Church came to assign the two nicest months of the year, as far as weather is concerned, to the Blessed Mother of God. If you are ever making plans to visit the Eternal City, try to go in October or May, one of Mary’s months!
During May, the Church especially promotes Marian devotions, like the Rosary, novenas, and litanies. Here at the Cathedral we honor the Virgin and give worship to God before each weekend Mass by praying the Rosary together. From the beginning, Catholics have understood the intimate connection between Holy Mass and the Virgin Mary. It was Christ Himself who connected them, when He gave this woman to the whole world as our Mother while He was still hanging on the wood of the Cross, offering that perfect sacrifice that is made present again on the altar in each Mass.
We Knights are enjoined to carry the Rosary with us always and to pray it often. This May, let us recommit ourselves to this pledge. Come early to Sunday Mass and join the community in the recitation of the Rosary. Pray the Rosary together with your family at home. Carry this holy weapon with you at all times. You will be shocked by the spiritual benefits that will come from God through this simple tool.

Our Council held it’s annual barbeque to benefit pro life causes yesterday.
This is an annual event and was held in the Wal-Mart parking lot. A lot of people work on the event and we really appreciate all our brother Knight’s help.
Half of the proceeds from our event are given to the Vitae Caring Foundation, Missouri Right To Life and Birthright. We encourage everyone to support these great causes.
It was a windy day in Jefferson City but we had a great event. Business was brisk and by the time I left the serving trailer we were out of ribs and potato salad and still had a couple hours to go.
We’re pretty sure the smell of that awesome smoke, which was blowing right into the front of the store, attracted a lot of attention.
Photos from the event have been uploaded so that you can see and download them if you want. Just click on this link: 2009 Barbeque Photo Album

As we finish Lent, observe the Sacred Triduum, and begin the celebration of the Easter season during this month of April, I would like to encourage all my brothers knights to take some time during these weeks to read again the Passion narrative from Sacred Scripture.
You may think I am crazy for suggesting this. On Palm Sunday you are going to hear the whole narrative from St. Mark. On Good Friday you are going to hear the whole narrative from St. John. Isn’t that (more than) enough?
If you are anything like me, you may find the liturgical proclamation of the Passion on these two days a little… tedious. It is very easy for the mind to begin to wander about half-way through. You begin to wonder just how long you will be stuck in church if we’ve still got the rest of this reading, plus a homily, plus the rest of the service to go. It is too easy not to focus on the words that are being proclaimed, even though these are the most sublime, awe-inspiring words ever put on paper.
So some time this month–when you have a free evening, a comfortable chair, and nothing else pressing on your time–sit down with your Bible and prayerfully read through the story of the Passion at your own pace. Take the time to stop and reflect on the parts that strike you. Read one of the two accounts that we will not hear proclaimed in the liturgy this year: either Matthew 26:14-27:66 or Luke 22:14-23:56.
Brother Knights:
I want to extend a big THANK YOU to all the Knights and all other parishioners that work hard on the Christmas Bazaar each year. It has allowed the Parish Association to purchase new stoves, convection ovens, and a warming oven for the Undercroft Kitchen. If you haven’t seen them stop by for a look.
Also the Knights started having the Undercroft folding chairs reconditioned by Missouri Vocational Enterprise and now the Parish Association has joined us in this effort. They are being repainted tan as part of the reconditioning so we can tell them apart. Thank you to everyone involved in this effort.
Our business meeting on this Wednesday April 8th will begin with a dinner at 6:15 PM with the meeting to follow at 7:00 PM.
The State Convention will again be held in Jefferson City on April 24th, 25th and 26th. We will hold a steak fry on Friday the 24th for those coming to the Convention and any parishioner can attend contact Mark Ruether at 659-7869 to reserve a steak, cost in advance is $12.50 or $15.00 at the door.
The Helias Council will host a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree ceremonies on Sunday April 19th. This is the weekend after Easter, mark your calendars and give me a call at 893-6870 to reserve your spot. Please consider moving up in your degree level.

If you haven’t been out to one of our Lenten fish fries then you’re missing one great meal.
Yesterday we held a very well attended dinner for people serving fresh fried fish, hush puppies, freedom fries, cole slaw, corn and all the trimmings.
This picture is from around 6pm when the tables were pretty much full.
Our Chaplain, Fr. Joe Shetler, was there helping serve.
We can use help on all these dinners so if you have some time you can donate please let us know and we’ll schedule in for the next one.
I don’t have results on our 50-50 drawing but I’ll have that in our next Knights Letter for sure.
This is just a reminder that if you can make it to one of our council activities and take a picture when I’m not there, please email it to me to use here on our website on in our Knights Letter.
Our March meeting was held last night. Here’s our officers preparing to give their reports.
Grand Knight Lewis Hancock is banging the gavel to get things started.
We had a good turnout but can always use some more. At every meeting we need to make decisions that affect the Council as a whole and your input is greatly appreciated.
One of the things we discussed was our upcoming annual barbeque which will be held on Saturday, April 4. We’ll be serving from 10am to 5pm.
Once again we’ll be located on the WalMart parking lot. Half of the proceeds from our sales go to support the Vitae Caring Foundation, Right To Life and Birthright. Orders over $30 get free delivery. Just call 690-5231 to place your order. We hope to see you there.
